Tourism Scholarships

Tourism is a Career...Over 40,000 Nova Scotians work in the Tourism Sector. The Canadian Tourism Industry offers a variety of rewarding careers and will create more than 90,000 new jobs over the next two years. This employment growth will result in tremendous opportunity for Canadians with the appropriate skills, knowledge and attitude.



The 1.6 million Canadians working in the Tourism Sector have many faces...people working in accommodation, food and beverage services, recreation and entertainment, transportation and travel services.

The Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council offers three Tourism Scholarships for graduating high school students pursuing post secondary education in tourism.

The Council also offers a scholarship for Tourism Professionals working in the Industry who are interested in pursuing a professional development opportunity to enhance their career.

In addition to the Council’s Scholarship the Industry offers a number of scholarships as listed below.

NSTHRC LogoWalter H. Johnson Jr. Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded annually. There are two award categories: GOLD - $1,250.00 and SILVER - $750.00. Both awards are renewable for one additional year, for $750.00 and $250.00 respectively. Applicants must apply for the renewal. Preference will be given to Tourism 11 or Tourism 12 graduates.  Application Deadline:  May 15th

CRITERIA

  1. Program: Successful candidates must be pursuing a recognized Tourism post-secondary program.
  2. Eligibility: All applicants must be graduating from a Nova Scotia High School in the current calendar year.
  3. Applications will include:
    • Official school transcript
    • Essay: This essay will be 300-500 words in length entitled, "Why I've Chosen a Career in Tourism"
    • A bound Portfolio that includes relevant schoolwork, references and resume

Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council/
Hotel Association of Nova Scotia Culinary Scholarship

With the tremendous growth in the Tourism Sector, cooking professionals are in great demand. To assist in the growth of culinary talent in Nova Scotia, the Hotel Association of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council are offering a Scholarship for high school graduates interested in pursuing post secondary education within the culinary trade. This Scholarship is presented annually in the amount of $1000 and is renewable for one additional year in the amount of $500. Applicants must apply for the renewal. Preference will be given to Tourism 11 or Tourism 12 graduates.   Application Deadline:  May 15th

CRITERIA

  1. Program: Successful candidates must be pursuing post-secondary education in a recognized culinary program.
  2. Eligibility: All applicants must be graduating from a Nova Scotia High School in the current calendar year.
  3. Applications should include:
    • A 500 word essay describing why the applicant has chosen to pursue a career in the culinary trade
    • Resume
    • Official school transcript
    • Letters of reference: one academic and one extra curricular/professional

Established in 1993, the Hotel Association of Nova Scotia's (HANS) primary objective is "To make Nova Scotia a 365 day a year travel destination". The principle role of this association is to act as a voice and represent the collective member hotels in expressing their views to all levels of government, media and academic institutions. This scholarship is presented annually in the amount of $1,000.00 and is non-renewable.   Application Deadline:  May 15th

CRITERIA

  1. Program: Successful candidates must be pursuing a recognized Tourism post-secondary program in Nova Scotia.
  2. Eligibility: All applicants must be graduating from a Nova Scotia High School in the current calendar year.
  3. Applications should include:
    • A 500 word essay describing why the applicant has chosen to pursue a career in the Hotel Industry and why they should be selected as a recipient
    • Resume
    • Official school transcript
    • Letters of reference: one academic and one extra curricular/professional

Judith B. Cabrita Tourism Professional Scholarship

To support the investment in human resource development in the Tourism Industry, NSTHRC is proud to award two scholarships for Tourism professionals seeking to upgrade their skills in their designated field.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

In order to be eligible for the Judith B. Cabrita Tourism Professional Scholarships, applicants must be:

  • Pursuing a professional development opportunity to enhance their skills or career path within the tourism industry OR pursuing the National emerit Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) designation.
  • Employed in the Nova Scotia tourism industry for a minimum of one year.

HOW TO APPLY:

Applicants are to submit the following items:

  • Letter of Introduction telling us about yourself and the professional development opportunity you are interested in pursuing - either emerit National Certification OR professional development (i.e. conference, training, or educational program).  The letter should incorporate how the opportunity will enhance job knowledge and improve career goals. 
  • Please include a letter of support from your employer and a current resume.

Applications are accepted throughout the year and are reviewed by the NSTHRC Scholarship Committee on an individual basis.
