Welcome to the Winter Edition of Professionally Speaking
As the economic recovery continues across the Country, renewed attention is being placed on the labourmarket. Future shortages will be a reality, as demographic shifts occur and the economy strengthens. As employers, you can mitigate the impact of future shortages by investing in your current workforce and ensuring you have good human resource practices. Becoming an employer of choice is one solution! In this edition we are pleased to recognize Cambridge Suites Hotel Sydney for becoming the first tourism business in the province to achieve the National Employer of Choice Status. For information on the program, go to www.discovertourism.ca.

As you begin new recruitment for 2010 , a great way to find employees is to create partnerships with the post secondary schools that offer business and tourism programming around the province. One upcoming event is a Job Fair being hosted on February 16th by the Nova Scotia Community College - Akerley Campus. This event will be a great opportunity for employers to meet new talent from the tourism management and culinary arts program.

In our "Articles" section, you'll find advice on recruiting new staff, upgrading the talent of existing employees and delegating during a downturn.

The Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council remains dedicated to improving training materials used for National Certification. In that regard, we are offering our latest Focus Group for Banquet Servers, Bartenders and Food and Beverage Servers. See "Certification" to learn how you can become involved.

Our Spring 2010 Supervisor and Human Resource Workshop schedule is currently being developed. These workshop dates are based on regional demand, therefore, we encourage you to indicate your interest and preference - additional details can be found under "Workshops".

In closing, I would like to thank you all for taking the time for Professionally Speaking. We value your feedback and welcome any input from industry.

Happy Reading!

P.S. "Save the Date". . . the 2010 Tourism Summit and Expo has been confirmed for November 28, 29 & 30 at the WTCC in Halifax.
